State of Emergency in Ecuador: President Daniel Noboa has declared a nationwide state of emergency for a period of 60 days, citing the existence of an internal armed conflict. This declaration authorizes military action against organized criminal gangs following numerous attacks on private, public, and government institutions.

Security Measures in Response to Gang Attacks: Despite major cities in Ecuador remaining relatively calm, police-military operations are ongoing to address sporadic gang attacks and threats. The government is actively taking measures to maintain security in the country.

Closure of U.S. Embassy and Consulate: The United States Embassy and Consulate in Ecuador will be closed on Monday, January 15, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Routine consular appointments are scheduled to resume on January 16, with security updates planned for the same date.

Uncertainty Regarding School Classes: The Ministry of Education in Ecuador has not yet determined whether schools will return to in-person classes on January 15 or continue with online education during the state of emergency.

Entry Requirements for Foreign Citizens: The Government of Ecuador has announced that, during the state of emergency, all foreign citizens entering the country via land border crossings with Colombia or Peru must present an apostilled certificate demonstrating a lack of criminal record.

Travel Advisory and Caution: The guidance from the travel advisory issued on June 22, 2023, remains valid. U.S. citizens in Ecuador are advised to exercise increased caution, reconsider travel to "Level 3" areas, and avoid areas marked as "Level 4." Compliance with local laws, including the nationwide curfew during the state of emergency, is emphasized.

Operational Status of International Airports: International airports in Quito and Guayaquil remain fully operational, although some flights to/from the United States have been canceled in recent and upcoming days. Travelers are advised to closely monitor their flight status and consider rebooking with the same airline or an alternative carrier.
